Relatives of War Veterans, their friends and history buffs will welcome this occasion to visit the battle and burial sites of those who fought in the Great War of 1914 – 1918 and to remember those who died in this 90th anniversary year. We have worked together with experts to produce this superb itinerary, which includes all the mayor monuments, battle sites and burial grounds of this epic war.

ITINERARY

Day 1

Depart from Dublin and travel to Rosslare for our ferry to Fishguard.
Continue on to our hotel in Maidstone, UK for 1 night.

Day 2

We take the ferry crossing Dover – Calais and then onwards to Belgium for our 4 nights stay.

Day 3   Battlefield of Flanders

Today we look at the battlefield around Ypres, starting at the preserved trenches at Sanctuary Wood and seeing the museum. We then move on to Tyne Cot Cemetery. In the afternoon we head to the Messines Ridge sector and the nearby Irish Peace Tower. At Ploegsteert we study the story of the Christmas Truce and see the Memorial. We end the day at the ‘Last Post Ceremony’ in Ypres.

Day 4   Tunnels and Trenches

We begin the day at Arras and spend the morning in the Wellington Quarries – a massive system of tunnels used by British troops in WWI, and dug our by New Zealand Tunnellers. This fascinating new site only opened in 2008, and is fully accessible by a lift and walkways. We visit the Arras Memorial, and travel out to Monchy le Preux to look at the defence of the village by the Newfoundland Regiment. We end the day a Vimy Ridge, captured by the Canadians in April 1917, seeing the preserved trench system, visitors centre and impressive memorial on Hill 145 – the highest point on Vimy Ridge

Day 5   The Somme, Death of a Generation

The haunting Somme battlefield is our destination today. We begin at the Historical Museum at Péronne and then to the largest British Mine Crater on the Western Front at La Boisselle. At Thiepval we visit the Memorial and then the Ulster Tower before seeing Newfoundland Park with its preserved trenches. We end the day at Serre and see the area where war poet Wilfred Owen fought

Day 6

We some free time in the morning in Ypres before heading to Calais for our ferry to the UK. Our overnight tonight is in Reading.

Day 7

The final day of our journey, we head to Fishguard for our ferry back to Ireland.

6 Days / 5 nights BELGIUM

Antwerp is the world centre of diamonds, a leading fashion design city and the birthplace of Rubens. There are designer shoe and antiques shops and down the cobbled streets you will find speciality chocolate and biscuit shops. We have included a guided visit to Diamond Land, the largest diamond showroom in Antwerp. Here you will see craftsmen at work, telling you the history and the role Antwerp plays in the diamond trade.

Brussels and the Grand Place


Belgium’s capital and also the capital of Europe; this city has it all, culture, architecture and is a truly exciting day out. There are plenty of things to see on our day excursion to Brussels - the Manneken Pis, Grote Markt – Grand Place, arguably one of the most beautiful squares in Europe. Our day trip also includes a visit to Waterloo Visitor Centre, epic battle place that spelled Napoleon’s doom.

Brugge


Life in Brugge, centres on the market square and is bordered by houses, old guildhalls and the market buildings overlooked by the town’s Belfry. The streets are old and cobbled but bursting with life. Some free time in Brugge is included.
